Prologue + Chapter One Preview of DREAMING OF EDEN

I’ve posted the first chapter of DREAMING OF EDEN on the great big web for anyone who might be interested. It’s available on BookRix; if you’ve never heard of it, it’s a website for posting and reading books. Formatting was kind of a nightmare, but it has a web interface. Your mileage may vary as to whether or not the interface is awesome or cumbersome. You can also download it in PDF, EPUB, or MOBI formats.

The prologue, for the curious who haven’t seen it one of the other times I’ve shared it. :D

She would die of exposure without ever waking up. It broke his heart to imagine her dead in the mud – like common trash — but it helped to remember that she wasn’t a person. Not really.

He stopped in the middle of the Antiquities District; the houses around were dim and all but a few windows are tinted. The closest house had genuine curtains in place of darkened windows. Richard stared at the house for a moment
before looking back at her. She was lank and limp against the back seat of the rental, her skin almost translucent. Sweat beaded on her forehead. Her breathing was labored. Her system was already in failure.

He took a deep breath, listening to the relentless tattoo of rain on the roof of the rental. Thunder rumbled in the distance as condensation bloomed on the windows. The thermometer on the dashboard read 10 Celsius.

Steeling his resolve, he got out of the car and opened the back door. One slender arm lolled out; he gripped it, yanking her out of the car and into the sucking mud. Far from the car, he left her in the rain and repeated his mantra: she’s not a person, not a person at all.
